The Heart of the Storm

an associative memory poem

Early September- training at Alorica
hearing my fiance’s voice the first time
lightning strikes- black sludge poured- a long forsaken heart

Lighting strikes this May day in Millvale
hitting the main power cable box- technical issues during the 2nd annual music fest.

Music- Diamondhead- lightning strikes the air
I jam out tonight at the show- had the attention of the guitarist- flashing horns and smiles

My ex was the guitarist of a local band
The day he left, skies split open, constant
downpours. No sun for 3 months during Summer.

Tucker is my lifeline- my emotional support dog without paperwork summer of 2018- feeling constant depression- the downpour lifting only when I hold him

Tucker hates going out in the rain, but I love it: the sound of a good downpour on Lake Erie while thunder cracks and reminds me that god’s bowling

a childhood story we tell ourselves to overcome fear.
Driving through storms makes me extra cautious- and a smile splits as I think about the day in downtown Medina

with my mom and aunt- stationary store then lunch downtown- the three of us only get together four times a year.
I think of the weird love of porches and storm- rain calms me.

Randy asks me about love- you once lived
for thunder, lighting and long nights in crowded metal venues,
are you ready to weather the storms of life with me
?

I wrote this poem in response to a prompt (storm) I received from the very talented Tej. Thank you for challenging me, this was fun.
