Thank You for Being My Fur Angel

a small love poem for my dog

My new nephew- 8 years old- seems timid
nervous of dogs that bite. Worried to pet
the black dog sitting at the table. I knew
better- grateful for a dog that has patience
with other animals and kids.

Grateful for the tongue that only licks those who mean
something to him.

He came to me in a dark time- I had just buried the
the third dog in 7 years and I wasn’t sure I could love.
He was the first dog that came and sat at my feet-
refusing to leave. The first dog that didn’t pull on me when I tried to walk him up the street.

He became my best friend- the one I held through
depression, the one I turned to as a walking buddy.
The one that took long drives with me and kept himself
in the passenger seat- not lunging at others outside.

Thank you for being my fur angel. The one who doesn’t need to promote himself- because everyone else talks about how good he is. Thank you for your gentleness and unfailing love. The way you remind me of loyalty and continued cuddles and kisses regardless of time spent away, ignoring you when home.
You’ve stayed with me for three years- showing me what it means to be compassionate. To be human.
