Open Letter to My Mother-In-Law

It’s a love-hate relationship.

Let’s make one thing clear right off the bat: I will never hold your son back from being part of your family.

I encourage him to come down to see all of you whenever possible. I have no objections to him being a son, brother, and uncle. I want him to watch the kids play sports whenever possible.

However, I just can’t. I tried for two years to be a part of your family. I hear the things that you say to him regarding his relationship with me.

You think that I’m using him. You think I'm faking my pain in order to not have to work. You wonder how we have money to go on day trips and to metal concerts.

While you’re targeting what I like to do, don’t forget to mention the nights he spends at the casino. Don’t forget about the thousands he spends on his favorite sports teams every year.

I’m sitting here on a Friday night on my laptop writing.

That’s what I do most nights. I don’t live an extravagant life. If I’m at a concert, that’s probably one of the seven or eight I’ll see all year.

Most of the time, I'm at home having a frugal night. You don’t know that because you’re not here.
