I’m Behind on NaNoWriMo, but…
I know I’ll still do great
Usually, when it comes to this month of writing, I enter guns blazing and throwing words at midnight on November 1st. This year I showed up more like that guy who brings a six pack to a meeting and says “party?”
Granted, I had a smaller goal which accommodated for a weekend trip out of state. However, I didn’t plan on getting sick the past 3 days. Brain fog and writing? Not a good combo.
However, here’s how I’m dealing with it:
- I’m reminding myself that my goal is to write more. I have an overall goal of 25,000 words. Maybe I won’t get every category goal I had done. I’m choosing to focus on the overall goal.
- I’m reminding myself that I used to have 10,000 word weeks. I’m not comparing but reminding myself it can be done
- I’m reminding myself that this is more about establishing a writing routine.
If you’re behind like I am or you end up being behind at some point, I’d urge you to remind yourself of these points too. Especially point number 3.
The hype that is so compelling at the beginning of the month, in my experience ends up wearing off around week 3.
You’ve sat and done sprint after sprint for hour after hour. If you’re also working full time, you’ve put this goal above a lot of other things.
Even if you don’t hit every goal perfectly or fall short of the 50,000 word goal (which was not even a consideration for me this year), you’ve likely done more than you may have thought possible.
So, starting today, I’m taking the challenge back. Getting back on the horse and writing my 1,000 words a day (plus a few days I’ll throw some extra in).
I’m still looking forward to seeing where it will take me.
