For Tucker…
a love letter for my dauschund
I’ve always loved the calm Daushund
who stole my heart on a June
morning in 17.
An older dog, at seven
yet the only dog who seemed calm
tranquil enough to be a support dog.
The next summer you help me through
eons of depression with your mere
presence. Letting me hold you,
making me feel held together.
Now you’re holding my mom
together as life changes.
I love the grey that is beginning to appear
on an all black face, through the rest
of your hair even though it reminds me
that you’re now 10.
And I need to pray for another 7 years.
I know we all need that calm presence
that bark that won’t cease until you’re
stealing the bed. That exerburance
that makes us believe you’re younger.
When asked who I wanted to give me away
this fall, the decision was easy:
tie a three cord collar on:
you’re not only my consort,
but also the ringbear.
You’ve earned the right to be there as
much as family who have known
me my entire life.
Grateful for the angel that graces our presence
daily with nothing but unconditional love.
