Poem 1 of 30 written during NaPoWriMo

Photo by Mason B. on Unsplash

Postcards from my younger self:

one from the college cafe- saved 7 years

in a worn copy of Writing Down the Bones,

a tribute to my

dreams of making art,

writing for joy alone.

Not realizing how broke college would

make me for years to come.

Chipotle business card in the back of a

chipped copy of 1984: three interviews the

year I graduated.

I ended up working for the company

serving Pitt students (my first big break)

after no call backs.

Notes On Hope: a found bookmark:

“She believed she could, so she did”

a trip to the library lighting

a fire to keep chasing the impossible.

My copy of Gothic Charm School housed an

index card of outfit formulas

from my Babybat days, learning the

lifestyle.

I don’t engage the style anymore

the rest is wedged in my heart.

I’m taken by the idea of leaving scraps of paper

in each of the books I love this year.

A clue to who I am right now,

to be found by a future version of me

who is free to remember and assume what

she will choose.
